This fall, MCAN collected 22,000 signatures – the second most signatures of any organization – and with all of our partners at Raise Up Massachusetts, we collected more than 158,000 signatures to qualify for the ballot our constitutional amendment to raise $1.5 billion in revenue by raising taxes on annual income over $1 million.  That was a crucial first step. Next up is securing the support of 25% of state legislators. Our first shot at garnering support is at the proposal’s hearing, which is scheduled for Tuesday, January 19th at the State House.

Our proposal would invest over $1.5 billion in quality public schools, affordable higher education, and a transportation system that works by asking millionaires to pay an additional tax of four percentage points only on annual income above $1 million. And while we know this measure would be great for Massachusetts families, we will face stiff and well-funded opposition at every step. By attending the hearing on January 19th, you can help reinforce how popular and needed this proposal is.
